Rs.500 mn fund for children disabled or orphaned due to Easter Sunday terror attacks

The government has taken measures to establish a special fund for children left disabled or orphaned due to the Easter Sunday bombings.

Issuing a statement, the Prime Minister’s Office said the Rs. 500 million fund will be set up with a Rs. 100 million grant from the government while the balance Rs. 400 million will be from donations.

This special fund is established for children affected by the death or disability of their parents as well as for the children disabled due to injuries sustained in the attacks.

The government will also bear the cost of overseas treatment for those who need it and a special program will also be implemented to identify the special needs of the affected.

The Prime Minister will present the relevant Cabinet Paper to the Cabinet of Ministers at its meeting today. A special committee is to be appointed under the leadership of the Prime Minister’s Secretary to oversee and implement this proposal.

It has been confirmed that 261 people were killed in the Easter Sunday attacks. Compensation has been paid for 174 deaths and for 226 injured.

In addition, the government has provided funds for the reconstruction of the devastated churches damaged in the attack. Also a 9-perch plot of land belonging to the Port Authority has been given to the St. Anthony’s Church in Kochchikade to expand the church, the Prime Minister’s Office said.
