President Maithripala Sirisena Saturday announced that he will take responsibility of economic management in order to reduce cost of living burden of the people. He made this announcement at a public meeting in Kegalle yesterday afternoon.
The President said he appointed the National Economic Council three months ago to fulfill this objective.
Addressing the meeting, the President said measures will be taken to grant relief to the general public by carrying forward the country’s economy.
He pointed out that there are problems regarding the country’s economy with the huge debt burden and another burden is cost of living.
He said the UNP was allowed to manage the economy according to their choice for the past three years. However, today people have serious economic problems. Therefore, three months ago he appointed the National Economic Council for economic management under his leadership, the President said.
President Sirisena said he will take charge of the economic management council form this year and requested the local industrialists and investors join hands with his program to lessen cost of living burden of the people. The President assured that local industries and local investments will be protected.
The President said he will take responsibility to strengthen the national economy.
Speaking about the Central Bank bond issue, the President said the Commission report clearly states who are responsible for the theft and the people are also aware of who were responsible for the ‘bank robbery’.
The President said he would not hesitate to give punishment to the culprits of the great robbery which has taken place from 2008 to 2015.
The President said his aim is to build a country without fraud and corruption regardless of party differences and sought cooperation of all citizens for the endeavor.
