Malaria spreading mosquito species found in Sri Lanka

Despite the Sri Lankan government's best efforts to prevent the return of malaria after Sri Lanka was certified by the World Health Organization as Malaria free, a new malaria spreading mosquito species has been found in the in the south-central region of the island. Four persons who contracted the disease have been reported from Kegalle, health authorities say. The four people with the disease found in Galigamuwa, Thaligama health medical office divisions are a group of Indian laborers who had come to work for the Ceylon Electricity Board. Sri Lanka successfully eliminated Malaria completely in 2016 after launching a program to eliminate the disease in 2009. Sri Lanka declares ‘Environment Week’ from today to mark World Environment Day

Sri Lanka will mark 'World Environment Day 2018', which falls on June 5, with a National Ceremony at the Independence Avenue, Kegalle on 4th June with the participation of President Maithripala Sirisena as the Chief Guest. This year, the theme for World Environment Day is "Beat Plastic Pollution" which calls for people to come together to combat one of the great environmental challenges. The government has declared an 'Environment Week' from 4th June and during the week the Central Environment Authority (CEA) has taken measures to regulate polythene and plastic waste disposal and raise awareness among the public, CEA Chairman Chandrarathne Pallegama said.

President Maithripala Sirisena Saturday announced that he will take responsibility of economic management in order to reduce cost of living burden of the people. Police fire tear gas to disperse people protesting the death of a little girl in Kegalle

The police said the tear gas was used to disperse the people protesting the death of a little girl in an accident in Kegalle Saturday morning. The protest was staged at Thoranagahapitiya area on the Kegalle - Avissawella main road until near midnight yesterday. Completely blocking the traffic on the Kegalle - Avissawella main road. Over fifty complaints filed over Election Law violations

The Elections Secretariat has received 56 complaints regarding election law violations. According to the commission, complaints were filed regarding delivery of goods and removal of poster cutouts. Complaints were received from the districts of Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Kandy, Galle, Matara, Anuradhapura, Kegalle and Batticaloa. Furthermore,  according to the Police headquarters, the past 24 hours saw six complaints being filed in this regard. Some of the complaints  filed were against displaying posters, banners and flags, driving vehicles, loudspeakers, vehicles and pasting of posters.

Ten complaints lodged over upcoming Local Government election

The National Elections Commission has received ten complaints with regard to the upcoming Local Government Election. The complaints were lodged from Ratnapura, Kalutara, Matale, Kegalle and Matara. Meanwhile, Executive Director of PAFFREL, Rohana Hettiarachchi, said that following the acceptance of nominations for 93 local government bodies, 15 cases of election law violations have been reported. The National Elections Commission says 597 political parties have deposited bonds for 248 local government bodies, so far. Additional Elections Commissioner, Saman Sri Ratnayake, said the acceptance of nominations for the relevant local government bodies will begin December 18.
