IMAGE SOURCE,GETTY IMAGES Image caption, Last year, Turkmenistan recommended residents wear masks because of "dust" even as the government insisted there were no cases A senior World Health Organization official has cast doubt on Turkmenistan's claim that it has zero Covid cases, telling the BBC it is unlikely the virus is not circulating in the country. "[It] has been spreading worldwide as a pandemic for almost two years now," said Dr Catherine Smallwood, a WHO senior emergencies officer. "From the scientific point of view, it's unlikely that the virus is not circulating in Turkmenistan." Turkmenistan is one of only a handful of countries, including North Korea, that claim to have no coronavirus cases. Dr Smallwood's comments represent the first public ch...

Trump fires two impeachment witnesses

US President Donald Trump has dismissed two senior officials who testified against him at his impeachment trial. The US envoy to the EU, Gordon Sondland, said he "was advised today that the president intends to recall me effective immediately". Just hours earlier, Lt Col Alexander Vindman, a top expert on Ukraine, was escorted from the White House. Mr Trump is said to desire a staff shake-up after senators cleared him in the impeachment case on Wednesday. "I am proud of our accomplishments. Our work here has been the highlight of my career," Mr Sondland said. And how was Vindman removed? Lt Col Vindman's counsel, David Pressman, told the BBC his client had been "escorted out of the White House where he has dutifully served his country and his president". "There is no questio...

Trump acquitted by Senate in impeachment trial

President Donald Trump has been cleared in his impeachment trial, ending a congressional bid to remove him from office that bitterly divided the US. The Senate, run by the president's fellow Republicans, voted to acquit him 52-48 on charges of abuse of power and 53-47 on obstruction of Congress. Democrats charged Mr Trump in December with pressuring Ukraine to smear a potential White House rival. He will become the first impeached president to seek re-election. In its historic vote on Wednesday, the Senate decided not to remove America's 45th president from office on charges arising from his dealings with Ukraine. If convicted on either charge, Mr Trump would have had to turn over his office to Vice-President Mike Pence. The Democratic-led House of Representatives approved ...

European Parliament overwhelmingly backs terms of UK’s exit

Members of the European Parliament have overwhelmingly backed the terms of the UK's departure from the EU. MEPs ratified the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement by 621 votes to 49 following an emotional debate in Brussels. After the vote, MEPs marked the UK's exit by singing Auld Lang Syne. Several British MEPs said they hoped the UK would return one day although Eurosceptics, including the Brexit Party's Nigel Farage, used their final speeches to tear into the EU. The UK is due to leave the bloc at 23:00 GMT on Friday. Ratification of the withdrawal agreement, agreed by the UK and EU in October, was not in doubt after it easily cleared its committee stage last week. Signing the letter confirming the EU's consent, the Parliament's president, David Sassoli, said the two sides must h...

Trump releases long-awaited Middle-East peace plan

US President Donald Trump has presented his long-awaited Middle East peace plan, promising to keep Jerusalem as Israel's undivided capital. He proposed an independent Palestinian state and the recognition of Israeli sovereignty over West Bank settlements. Standing alongside Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, Mr Trump said his proposals "could be the last opportunity" for Palestinians. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas dismissed the plans as a "conspiracy". "I say to Trump and Netanyahu: Jerusalem is not for sale, all our rights are not for sale and are not for bargain. And your deal, the conspiracy, will not pass," he said in a televised address from Ramallah in the West Bank. The blueprint, which aims to solve one of the world's longest-...

Trump says he’ll likely release Middle East peace plan by Tuesday

Trump says he will likely unveil the long-awaited plan before Netanyahu, Gantz visit the White House next week. US President Donald Trump said on Thursday he will likely release his long-awaited peace plan for the Middle East before Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visits Washington, DC, next week. Speaking to reporters on Air Force One en route to Miami for a political event, Trump said Palestinians might react negatively to his plan at first, but that it would benefit them. "It's a great plan," said Trump, who will meet with Netanyahu at the White House on Tuesday. "It's a plan that really would work." He is also expected to meet Netanyahu's election rival, Benny Gantz. Trump said his administration has talked briefly to the Palestinians, who have rej...

FUNDAMENTAL LEGACY OF THE NUREMBERG AND TOKYO TRIALS (1945-1948)

By Wedyan Al Madani These – rather unfortunate – days some voices in Europe are trying, in a quite ahistorical fashion, to question the very fundaments of the antifascist legacy. Dangerous and highly destructive equitation attempts are on the way. Still, this legacy is what finally made the Old continent human and peaceful – a role model to admire and for the rest of us to follow. These regrettable equitationsmake it worth to revisit the Nuremberg and Tokyo trials, which are essential pillars of the Human Rights charter brokered right after under the OUN auspices. Consequently, a very legacy of these trials is extraordinary and far reaching. Itrepresents a core building material of the house called Modern Europe – something that theDirector of International Institute IFIMES, ...
