The Criminal Investigation Department has visited former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s residence in Colombo Friday (17) in order to record a statement regarding the abduction and assault of Journalist Keith Noyahr.
Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa had been informed to come to the CID to obtain a statement regarding the assault on Keith Noyahr.
Since the former president has not come, the CID has decided to go to his residence in Wijerama Road in Colombo and obtain a statement, the Police Spokesman said.
The statement by Mr. Rajapaksa is currently being recorded, the Police Spokesman added.
The CID has already recorded statements from former defense secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and Speaker Karu Jayasuriya regarding the abduction and assault of Journalist Keith Noyahr.
Keith Noyahr, the former defense writer and the Associate Editor of English weekly The Nation was abducted by unidentified men on 22 May 2008. He was found a day later badly beaten and with head injuries. Noyahr left the country following the attack.
The CID last year arrested eight suspects including six army personnel in connection with the journalist’s abduction and assault. Former Chief of Staff of Army, retired Major General Amal Karunasekara is one of the suspects.
