Five people have died, two have been injured, and another person has been reported missing, due to the current adverse weather conditions prevailing in the country.
The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said that 4,391 persons from 1,143 families have been affected due to the adverse weather while 635 houses have been partially damaged and 12 houses fully damaged. A total of 251 affected persons have been sheltered at nine safe locations, DMC stated.
Meanwhile, the landslide early warning issued for seven districts due to the heavy rainfall experienced in those areas has been further extended.
The National Building Research Organization (NBRO) stated that the landslide early warning for Badulla, Ratnapura, Matale, Kegalle, Kandy, Kurunegala and Galle districts has been extended until today (8).
In addition, the Meteorology Department stated that showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North Western and Northern provinces as well as in the Galle and Matara Districts.
Additionally, the Meteorological Department stated that heavy showers over 100mm are expected in these areas.
Issuing the weather forecast for sea areas the Met Department said a low-pressure area will develop around South-east Bay of Bengal during the next few days.
Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the sea areas extending from Kankesanthurai to Potuvil via Puttalam, Colombo, Galle and Hambantota. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the other sea areas around the island.
Winds will be Westerly to North-westerly and speed will be (30-40) kmph in the sea areas around the island.
Wind speed can increase up to (55-65) kmph at times in the sea areas extending from Colombo to Potuvil via Galle and Hambantota.
The sea areas extending from Colombo to Pottuvil via Galle and Hambantota will be rough at times. Sea areas will be fairly rough elsewhere.
Naval and fishing communities are requested to be attentive in future weather forecasts.
The Irrigation Department has also advised people living in the lowland around the reservoirs to remain cautious of water levels.
