Law and Order Minister vows not to let the “Aava” gang to rise in Jaffna

Law and Order Minister Sagala Ratnayaka says the government has taken maximum possible action to control the ‘Aava gang’, the underworld group active in the Northern Province.

He said the government will not let the so-called Aava gang, or any other criminal gang, to rise in Jaffna.

“It has been reported that the “Aava” gang operating in the Northern Province has been re-activated. Various media reports have also been published. But I would like to say that this gang will never again raise its head,” the Minister said.

“Eight cases were reported in the Northern Province within the past two days. The Police have already arrested six individuals in connection with these incidents and further investigations are underway to arrest other members of the group,” the Minister said, in a statement.

The Minister said to expedite the investigations, the Police have cancelled the leave of all officers in the Jaffna police area.

“Not only in Jaffna, We have also launched operations to curb the underworld gangs in the South. The process has already been started and the Police have made significant progress in this regard,” he said

The Minister said the details of those who operating the underworld from overseas have already been uncovered. “We have even identified the places where they are operating from,” he said adding that all necessary measures are being taken to arrest them and extradite to the country.
