A man accused of driving his car into pedestrians in the Australian city of Melbourne has been charged with 18 counts of attempted murder.

Police said they had charged the man, former Afghanistan refugee Saeed Noori, after formally interviewing him about the attack that police had earlier described as a “deliberate act.”

More than a dozen people are still being treated in hospital following the incident.

Nine of the injured are foreign nationals from countries including South Korea, Ireland, Venezuela, China, India and Italy.
