Ranjan allowed to follow degree course

Former Parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake who is serving a four-year sentence for Contempt of Court, has been granted permission to pursue his higher education while in prison.

The Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya said Ramanayake had requested permission for this and that the permission letter had been issued on the instructions of the Justice Minister.

Ramanayake will be allowed to attend the relevant external degree course lectures online from Welikada Prison and he will be attending the online lectures in the presence of a prison rehabilitation officer, Upuldeniya said.

He is also allowed to bring in textbooks, supplementary notes, etc. on the subject he is studying from outside. The Commissioner General said that all this is being done under the close supervision of the prison officers.Ramanayake has applied for an External Degree Course in Youth and Community Development from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the Open University of Sri Lanka.

He has passed the required Basic Certificate Course.
