Former First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa has been remanded until October 13 by the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court after being arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption.
Rajapaksa was produced before court following her arrest earlier today in connection with an investigation involving the Siriliya Saviya organisation.
Her remand places another figure from the very top of Sri Lanka’s former political establishment in custody. Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe was arrested and remanded in August 2025, becoming the first former Sri Lankan Head of State to be remanded.
Shiranthi Rajapaksa, wife of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, now becomes arguably the most prominent member of a former First Family to be remanded following Wickremesinghe.
The allegations against her remain allegations and have yet to be proved in court.
Be that as it may, the symbolism is difficult to ignore. First, a former President was remanded. Now, a former First Lady. The real test will be whether these investigations ultimately result in prosecutions capable of standing up in court.
