Significant changes in UNP ministerial portfolios expected in cabinet reshuffle

Significant changes in the ministerial portfolios assigned to the United National Party (UNP) are expected in the anticipated second cabinet reshuffle of the Sri Lankan government, sources say.

It has been reported that the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had agreed to make the changes in his party’s ministerial portfolios in response to a request made by the President Maithripala Sirisena.

In the context that the UNP has been assigned 30 ministerial portfolios out of the 48-member cabinet, the party is likely to face a significant change in its ministerial assignments during the reshuffle.

The 19th Amendment to the Constitution also permits 45 non-cabinet junior ministerial portfolios in the national government.
