The Ministry of Finance and Central Bank of Sri lanka in a statement says they wish to assure the public and all other stakeholders that the banking system is stable and that the operations of state banks are being carried out smoothly contrary to the statements made otherwise.
Earlier today, SJB MP Harsha De Silva told parliament that he is hearing reports that a State Bank has defaulted payments.
MP Harsha de Silva called on the authorities to immediately conduct a probe into the matter.
Stating that the further depreciation of the Rupee is severely impacting the State Banks, he warned that this is leading to the collapse of the banking system.
MP Harsha de Silva further said the solution to the matter is in the Parliament, but the Government was failing to address the matter by not attending sessions.
Pointing out that this was a violation of the Constitution, the MP said the Government had disregarded his warning on the buy-sell swap system that had been approved for banks, which is now leading to the collapse of the banking system.
