Sri Lanka Police say measures have been taken to re-certify firearms licenses and the licensed gun owners should take their license to the nearest police station to get them certified.
Police Special Task Force (STF) has also launched a special operation to ensure that license holders are actually in possession of the licensed firearm.
The operation has been launched since information have been received that licensed firearms are in the hands of wrong people
Meanwhile, steps have been taken to attach the organized crime division teams into STF camps in order to curb organized crime.
Also special operations are being carried out to arrest criminals engaged in organized crime, the police say.
These measures have been taken due to the increased use of firearms in organized crime and the possession of firearms by ineligible people, according to the police.
