Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena who is in Nairobi to attend the fourth session of the UN Environment Assembly on Thursday held bilateral discussions with the President of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta.
President Kenyatta warmly welcomed his Sri Lankan counterpart to State House in Nairobi.
During this meeting, President Sirisena appreciated the government of Kenya for organizing the conference successfully and as a member country, offered Sri Lanka’s fullest support to implement decisions taken at the conference in the future .President Kenyatta commending the President Sirisena for his speech at the conference and the initiatives taken by the President for the environment, expressed the need for Kenya and Sri Lanka to deepen the ties in the areas of interest to the two countries particularly in the tourism and agricultural sectors.
Both leaders paid their attention on how to implement the collaborations entered between the two countries during the Kenyan Foreign Affairs Minister Monica Juma’s visit to Sri Lanka recently.
Diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Kenya dates back to the year 1970. Both countries are members of the Commonwealth, the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), IORA and G77.
The Kenyan President said as a result of President Sirisena’s visit to Kenya the relationship between the two countries will be broadened in the future and the two leaders agreed to work in collaboration internationally.
Meanwhile, a brief meeting between President Maithripala Sirisena and the Prime Minister of Rwanda Edouard Ngirente, was also held in Nairobi.
