The State Timber Corporation has introduced Timco Wood Charcoal as a practical solution to the fuel and gas problem in the country, Earlier, Agriculture, Wildlife and Forest Resources Conservation Minister Mahinda Amaraweera had said that the possibility of using wood scraps discarded by the Timber Corporation would be researched.
Therefore, State Timber Corporation Chairman M. S. Karunaratne carried out research and commenced producing charcoal.
The charcoal produced by the State Timber Corporation was introduced yesterday (6) afternoon at the Wildlife and Forestry Ministry. Minister Mahinda Amaraweera, Ministry Secretary Chandra Herath, Timber Corporation President M. S. Karunaratne and General Manager of the Research and Training Department Dr. C. K. Muthumala were present.
The Institute of Industrial Technology has confirmed that the heat capacity of this wood charcoal is at a very optimal level, Dr. Muthumala said.
Arrangements have been made to provide a charcoal of this wood by the State Timber Corporation at Rs. 130. The chairman said that since there is a huge demand for this, this product will be distributed all over the island.
Minister Mahinda Amaraweera thanked the staff of the State Timber Corporation for taking steps to produce charcoal as an alternative energy source to the fuel and gas crisis by using the pieces of wood that were cut and removed by the State Timber Corporation so far and allowed to rot without any use.
