Statements are to be recorded by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) today (31), from the captain and chief engineer of ‘MV X-Press Pearl’ over the recent inferno at sea, the Police Media spokesperson said.
The duo is currently residing at a hotel in Wellawatte.
Statements will also be recorded from the other crew members on board.
The Deputy General Manager of the Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) had filed a complaint at the Colombo Harbour Police Station on 23 May in regard to the incident.
Initial investigations were carried out by the Colombo Harbour Police and facts were reported to the Colombo Magistrate’s Court while samples were sent to the Government Analyst’s Department on the orders of the court.
The CID took charge of the investigation yesterday (31) with a 10 manned special team consisting of three Chief Inspectors and an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP).
Investigations will be carried out on the instructions of the Director and the DIG of the Criminal Investigations Department.
