Sri Lanka court jails extremist Buddhist monk for threatening missing journalist’s wife

A Sri Lankan court on Thursday sentenced the extremist Buddhist monk Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero for six months in prison for threatening the wife of missing journalist Prageeth Ekneligoda. Homagama Magistrate Udesh Ranatunga last month convicted the General Secretary of Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) organization on two counts of harassing and intimidating Sandya Eknaligoda in the Homagama Magistrate Court premises. The Magistrate sentenced the hardline Thero to two six-month terms of imprisonment to be served concurrently. In addition, the Magistrate ordered Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara to pay a fine of Rs. 3000 and pay a compensation of Rs. 50,000 to Sandhya Ekneligoda. Additional compensation for Beruwala-Aluthgama victims

The Cabinet of Ministers has granted approval for the allocation of an additional Rs. 185 million towards the payment of further compensation for the damages caused to households, equipment, etc., during the public disturbances in Beruwala and Aluthgama in 2014. The government has already granted compensation for the properties damaged in the incidents allegedly caused by the Bodu Bala Sena and other groups. Accusations were also leveled against former Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa that the attacks were carried out with his knowledge. Meanwhile, during an ifthar event in Colombo on June 8th, Rajapaksa has reportedly admitted that the government authorities at the time could have done more to settle disputes with the Muslim community. Sri Lankan government to pay compensation to victims of 2014 communal violence in Aluthgama

Sri Lanka's Cabinet of Ministers has granted approval to the government to pay compensation to the victims of the communal violence occurred on 15th and 16th of June 2014 in Beruwela, Aluthgama areas. Properties belonging to 273 families in the Beruwela and Aluthgama areas were destroyed by unidentified people during the clashes. The Army has repaired the houses and other buildings damaged during the riots. However no compensation was paid for the victims to replace the furniture and the other household items and to restore the livelihood of the victims, the Minister of Prison Reforms Rehabilitation Resettlement and Hindu Religious Affairs D. Case against Bodu Bala Sena leader Gnanasara Thera postponed to 11 December

The case against the General Secretary of Bodu Bala Sena (BBC) organization, Galagodaaththe Gnanasara Thera on the charges of the contempt of court was taken for hearing today at the Appeals Court in Colombo. Ven Pititgala Dhammadinna Thera gave evidence today. The case was postponed to 11th December and the court ordered to summon the Officer-In-Charge of Homagama Police and the jailors to give evidence on that day. Gnanasara Thera was charged due to his behavior in court during the hearing of the case on the disappearance of journalist Prageeth Ekneligoda in January last year.
