Bus en route to Jana Balaya attacked at Hali-Ela

A bus which was set to be participating at the ‘Jana Balaya’ protest rally by the Joint Opposition has, reportedly, suffered an attack. The incident has occurred at around 5.45 am this morning (05) in Bogahamadiththa, Hali-Ela. Followers of MP Dilan Perera had been assembling people in to the bus to attend the rally when a cab without a number plate had attacked them, according to one of its organizers, Pathmalatha. Hali-Ela police is conducting investigations regarding the incident.

One dead, 34 injured as bus falls 150 ft in to precipice in Sri Lanka

One person was killed and 34 passengers sustained injuries when a bus rolled down a precipice in Alugolla area in Badulla, state TV network reported. The passenger bus attached to the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) was plying from Kandegedara to Badulla when it toppled in to a 150-foot precipice near Alugolla. The injured have been admitted to Badulla General Hospital. According to the hospitals sources 17 of the injured are in serious condition.

Police fire tear gas to disperse people protesting the death of a little girl in Kegalle

The police said the tear gas was used to disperse the people protesting the death of a little girl in an accident in Kegalle Saturday morning. The protest was staged at Thoranagahapitiya area on the Kegalle - Avissawella main road until near midnight yesterday. Completely blocking the traffic on the Kegalle - Avissawella main road. The Police fired tear gas around 11: 30 pm to disperse the people and clear the road for traffic. Police said 13 people were arrested in connection with the protest for destruction of public property and inconveniencing the public. Priority bus lane programme reaches new phase

The priority bus lane programme launched the next phase of the project this morning. The lane stretches between Borella and Maradana. The programne was carried out between 6 a.m and 9 a.m. today (Jan 10) under the purview of Megapolis and Western Province Development Minister, Patali Champika Ranawaka. Expressing his views Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka stated that in order to solve the problem of congestion the public face, it is a “must” to reinvent the transportation service in future, which includes private sector, public sector and the railway system. Futhermore, he stated that steps have been taken to initiate the light rail system during this year, “the plan is to finish it by 2023 and to create a new experience.”
