Sri Lanka to establish a 400 MW Natural Gas Power Plant in Hambantota

Considering the importance of introducing Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as a source of energy to Sri Lanka, the Government has held discussions with Government of China to jointly establish a 400 megawatt natural gas power plant in Hambantota on G2G basis. The project will be implemented with the prime objective of providing electricity to the industrial zone proposed to be constructed at Hambantota and to overcome the power scarcity that may occur in the future. The project to establish the power plant will be implemented under the partnership of Ceylon Electricity Board and China Machinery Engineering Corporation which is nominated by the Government of China. Norochcholai power plant to purchase coal under spot tender

Sri Lanka’s cabinet has granted approval to purchase 300,000 metric tons of coal for the Norochcholai power plant under a spot tender from Swiss Singapore Overseas Enterprises Private Limited. A cabinet decision said the approval came following the endorsement of the Standing Cabinet Appointed Procurement Committee (SCAPC) which considered the necessity of providing coal for the coal power plant in Puttalam. Accordingly, Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy is to purchase the required quantity at FOBT price of 87.97 US dollars per metric ton from the Swiss Singapore Overseas Enterprises.
