Sri Lanka apparel exports hit US$4.8 billion in 2017

Sri Lanka's apparel exports has recorded the highest annual export revenue this year, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce said. According to the Apparel export revenue data issued by both Joint Apparel Association Forum (JAAF) and Sri Lanka Apparel Exporters Association (SLAEA), the total Sri Lankan apparel exports for Year 2017 was US$ 4.818 billion, an increase of 3.06% from US$ 4.67 billion recorded in 2016. For the month of December 2017 alone, the exports were at US$ 452 million, a 21% increase in comparison to 2016 December's US$ 374 million. Prices of several essential items reduced ahead of festive season

The Ministry of Industry and Commerce states that steps have been taken to reduce prices of several essential food items aiming to provide relief to the people during the festive season. The Ministry issuing a statement said essential food items at reduced prices can be obtained from the 372 Sathosa outlets across the island with no shortage. Accordingly, the price of a kilo of White Kekulu has been reduced to Rs. 62 per kilo from Rs. 65. The price of a kilo of Nadu rice which was at Rs 74 has been reduced to Rs 70. Rice shortage over with the arrival of 100000 MT rice shipment

Sri Lanka's Ministry of Industry and Commerce announced today that the first batch of low priced rice out of the huge 100,000 MT Indian rice tranche has been offloaded and is now moving within Sri Lankan retail market, ending any supply fears. According to the press release issued by the Ministry during the November 4-5 weekend, a total of 20,000 MT tranche of parboiled 'nadu' rice sent by an Indian supplier to the Cooperative Wholesale Establishment (CWE) of Sri Lanka have been offloaded at Port of Colombo and been distributed to CWE warehouses. The value of the received 20, 000 MT rice stock is USD 8.9 million (Rs 1.36 billion).
