Knife-wielding robber makes off with Rs 1.7 million from finance company

A suspect wearing a full face helmet and armed with a knife has robbed Rs 1.7 million in cash from a private finance company in Chavakachcheri. Police said that armed robbery had taken place at around 8.15 am today (19) at the branch of a finance company located at Chavakachcheri on the A9 road. The suspect had reportedly used the knife to threaten the employees and steal the money as it was being extracted from a safe at the institution. The suspect who was wearing a full face helmet had arrived on a motorcycle, which he had also used to flee the scene. Chavakachcheri Police is conducting further investigations.

Person injured in shooting at Maligawatte

A person has been hospitalised after being injured in a shooting incident at Jumma Masjid Junction in Maligawatte. Police said that the shooting was carried out by two gunmen on a motorcycle. The incident comes just days after a similar shooting claimed the life of a woman in the same area. A shooting incident had occurred this evening (26) at the Jumma Junction in Maligawatte, Colombo. A 31 year woman from Maligawatte area had been killed in the shooting at the Jumma Junction in Maligawatte on Sunday (August 26). Two unidentified persons who arrived in a motorcycle had shot the said woman who was walking on the road. She had succumbed to the injuries while on the way to the hospital.

Singer killed in motorcycle accident in Chilaw

A person died after the motorcycle he was riding collided with a lorry at Bandarawatta on the Chilaw-Colombo main road. Chilaw Police said that the incident had occurred at around 10.00pm last night. The deceased has been identified as Akila Shirantha Fernando, 33, a resident of Malwatta in Chilaw. He was reportedly the singer of a musical band in Chilaw. Police said that the accident had occurred when the motorcyclist had attempted to overtake another vehicle and that he had collided head-on with an oncoming lorry. The motorcyclist was pronounced dead on admission to the Chilaw General Hospital. The lorry and its driver have been taken into custody while Chilaw Police traffic unit is conducting further investigations.

Police nab two on a motorcycle carrying swords in Chavakachcheri

The Chavakachcheri police early this morning arrested two individuals on a motorcycle carrying swords. The suspects were arrested at Mattuwil- Sivan Kovil Road in the Chavakachcheri police division. They were also riding the motorcycle without a valid license. The police believe they may have been carrying the swords with the intention to commit a crime. The two suspects aged 21 and 22 years are to be produced before the Chavakachcheri Magistrate's Court today.
