Constable hacked for preventing angry mob from torching car involved in fatal crash

A motorcyclist was killed in a head-on collision involving a motorcycle and a luxury car, yesterday (23) at around 8.30 p.m. on the Dambulla-Habarana main road in Pelwehera area. According to the police, the luxury car was en route to Sigiriya from Dambulla when the motorcycle, which had been travelling in the opposite direction, had made a turn towards his home across the main road and collided with the car. The accident has been caused by the negligence of both parties, as the luxury car had been travelling at an excessive speed and the motorcyclist had carelessly crossed the road, said Inspector of Police Sampath Wickramaratne of Dambulla police. Court grants bail to 58 people arrested in Kataragama

A Sri Lankan court today granted bail to 58 people arrested in connection with the attack on Kataragama police station and released on bail. During an agitation held by residents of Kataragama from morning to noon yesterday (21) the police arrested 13 women and 45 men for blocking the road, damaging the road, assaulting and injuring police officers, interfering with the duties of the police officers. An unruly mob attacked the Kataragama police station hurling stones after a night patrol policeman shot and killed a motorcyclist on Saturday night after the deceased did not heed the police orders to stop at a security checkpoint. Police fire tear gas after Kataragama shooting

A motorcyclist who drove away, defying orders, in Kataragama, died due to police shooting. According to the Police Media Spokesperson, Ruwan Gunasekara, a group of people had stoned the Kataragama Police after the incident. Furthermore, he stated that tear gas was fired in order to disperse the crowds. The victim is a 44-year-old resident of Nagahavidiya, Kataragama. His body has been placed at the Kataragama Hospital. The police media spokesperson stated that the police officer, who allegedly shot the motorcyclist, has been arrested.
