64 MPs to lose pensions if parliament dissolves today

If the parliament of Sri Lanka is dissolved at midnight today as planned, 64 parliamentarians will lose out on their pensions. A Member of Parliament must complete a five-year tenure to receive pension rights. Accordingly, the United National Party (UNP) parliamentarians will lose the most pension rights, with 36 MPs in total who might lose the right. Additionally, 21 United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) MPs, 6 Tamil National Alliance (TNA) MPs, and one JVP MP lose their pension rights. Fifty-five MPs given transport allowance of Rs 200,000

The Joint Opposition says that it deplores the monthly transport allowance of Rs 200,000 given to 55 selected MPs. Joint Opposition MP Gamini Lokuge had addressed the Secretary of the Ministry of Lands and Parliamentary Reforms on May 28, requesting for information regarding a group of selected MPs, who are allegedly given a monthly allowance of Rs 200,000 or more, apart from their salaries and other allowances. Accordingly, in a response letter, the Secretary of the Ministry informed MP Gamini Lokuge on June 20, that the said transport allowance is given for the MPs who are assigned to monitor development projects of the government. PM says that no proposal was made to him on MP salary hike

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe says that there was no proposal presented to him or the Cabinet regarding a salary increment of MPs. He points out that the claims of the alleged salary hike for MPs are only mentioned in newspapers. PM had stated this at the UNP parliamentary group meeting held at the Temple Trees, yesterday (06). As the official expenses of MPs had increased, a suggestion was made to measures regarding it at a Party Leaders’ meeting held several months before, and MPs salaries were also discussed there, PM said. PM orders UNP MPs to stop criticizing the SLFP

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has directed all UNP MPs to immediately stop criticizing members of the SLFP in the government, a UNP MP said. The Prime Minister has also ordered the UNP MPs not to make any critical remarks against the 16 SLFP MPs who voted in favor of the no confidence motion against the Prime Minister. Accordingly, the UNP MPs have been asked to focus on strengthening the unity government in order to carry out its 2015 mandate.
