Appeal Court to hear former Defense Secretary’s revision petition seeking release in Avant Garde case on May 31

The Court of Appeal today fixed the hearing of a revision petition filed by the former Defense Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa requesting the court to release him and seven other dependents from the charges filed by the bribery Commission over the floating armory of the Avant Garde Maritime Services. When the revision petition was taken up for hearing today, the two-judge bench of Appeal Court Chairman Preethi Padman Surasena and Justice Arjuna Obeysekera decided to direct the petition to another bench for consideration. Accordingly, the petition will be considered on 31 May. Court grants until 6th April to produce Lalith Weeratunga’s visa permit in court for overseas travel

The Court of Appeal today ordered the lawyers appearing for former president's secretary Lalith Weeratunga to produce the visa permit in court on the 6th of April to grant their client permission to travel abroad. The bench comprising President of the Appellate Court Justice Preethi Padman Surasena and Justice Shiran Gunaratne issued the order today when the revision petition submitted by Lalith Weeratunga, who was convicted of misusing state money, requesting approval to travel abroad. The Court of Appeal earlier this month set aside the Colombo High Court's decision to reject Weeratunga's request for overseas travel and granted permission. Court dismisses Welikada Prison riot petition

The Court of Appeal on Monday decided to dismiss a petition filed in connection with the death of 27 inmates in the Welikada Prison in 2012 since an investigation has already been initiated by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of police. The Court of Appeal Thursday extended the interim injunction issued earlier preventing police from taking legal actions against former Defense Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa until February 15.
