Police seize stock of illegally imported foreign liquor

The police have seized over 1000 bottles of foreign liquor in a container that has been brought without paying Customs duties. The container was found at the Egodawatte area in Maharagama, during a raid conducted by the Special Task Force (STF) police on a tip off received. In addition to the liquor bottles a large quantity of medicines have also been seized during the raid. The person who brought the container to the country has also been taken into police custody.

South Africa's elite police unit have raided the home of the controversial Gupta family as the investigation into so-called state capture continues. Three people have been arrested so far, including one of the brothers, with two other people expected to hand themselves in, police said in a statement. The Gupta family have been accused using their friendship with President Jacob Zuma to wield enormous political influence for their business interests. They all deny the allegations. Thambuthegama police foil sale of ‘pills’ to school children

A stock of drugs was seized by police in the Thambuthegama area. The raid was launched by the Thambuthegama police, based on a tip off. An individual, allegedly  in possession of drugs, was arrested. He is reported to be a 28 year old resident of Nallachchiya, Thambuththegama. Police suspect that the individual was ready to sell the pills to school children. The suspect will be produced before the Thambuththegama Magistrate’s Courts.

No non-biodegradable shopping bags, lunch sheets from today

By Shanika Sriyananda The Central Environmental Authority (CEA) is to begin raids from today to nab those who defy the new guidelines on all polythene products, under a three-month plan to phase out harmful polythene shopping bags, rigifoam boxes and lunch sheets in the country. The guidelines were announced in the gazette for manufacturing shopping bags, rigifoam boxes and lunch sheets following a proposal by President Maithripala Sirisena, who is the Minister of Environment. Three arrested bringing 100 kilograms of marijuana from Point Pedro coast

Three suspects were arrested while they were transporting 100 kilograms of marijuana in a motor boat at the Ibbasetti coastal area in Point Pedro. The officers of the Point Pedro police and the Coast Guard conducted the raid yesterday afternoon The suspects aged 40, 45 and 44 years are residents of Point Pedro. The suspects are to be produced before the Point Pedro Magistrate's Court today (24).

Two in custody over brewing ‘Green Tea’ controversy

Two suspects have been arrested in Nagalagam Weediya, Colombo with a stock of narcotic plants. The plants which had been brought into the country from Zambia was to be re-exported under the guise of green tea. Police said, the raid was conducted by the Police Anti Narcotics Bureau. The institute which was raided, was being run under the guise of a printing press. The seizure of drugs weighed 542 kilogrammes. Preliminary investigations revealed that narcotic plants were to be re-exported to the United States and the UK. Two suspects, a male and a female aged 18 and 31, were arrested.

Underworld suspects arrested in Elpitiya raid

Four underworld members, including a leading underworld figure allegedly connected to several murders and ransom cases, have been arrested during a raid carried out in the Gonalagoda area in Niyagama, Elpitiya. The raid has been carried out by the Organised Crimes Control Unit of the Police Special Task Force (STF), on Friday evening. According to the STF, a revolver firearm, five bullets, a hand grenade, five rounds of ammunition used for T-56 firearms and a shotgun have been discovered in possession of the suspects. Further investigations are underway.

Customs seize illegal cigarettes worth Rs. 80 million

Sri Lanka Customs during a raid conducted Friday has discovered a container of illegally imported cigarettes from the Orugodawatta Container Yard. The stock of cigarettes illegal imported from Dubai is estimated to worth Rs. 80 million. The stock of foreign cigarettes estimated to be about 1.6 million has been brought in a 20-foot container and hidden in gas ovens. These cigarettes have been identified as a product of Dubai.

A suspect was arrested with a stock of counterfeit currency notes in Valachchenai, Manipay, after a police raid Police stated that the raid was carried out after a tip-off.
