The National Council for Road Safety says that three-wheeler registrations have fallen considerably in the past year.
The Council says the drop is due to several decisions taken by the government recently to regulate the three wheelers.
Transport and Civil Aviation Ministry has gazetted a series of three-wheeler safety regulations in January 2017 but they were revised after objections from three wheeler associations. The revised regulations are expected to be presented in Parliament this year.
According to the Department of Motor Traffic statistics, 56,945 three-wheelers have been registered in the year 2016, but 22,172 three-wheelers registered in 2017.
The Department of Motor Traffic states that 98,815 three-heelers were registered in 2012, 83,673 in 2013, 79,038 in 2014 and 129,547 in 2015.
The situation has changed drastically, and in the year 2017 registrations declined by 61 percent compared to 2016.
