U.S., UK advise their citizens visiting Sri Lanka to avoid unrest areas

Following the inter-communal violence in Ampara and Kandy, the United States and the United Kingdom warned their citizens visiting Sri Lanka that more incidents of violence were possible and advised to avoid the unrest areas.

Issuing a Security Alert for Sri Lanka, the U.S. Embassy in Colombo said the Sri Lankan government declared an island-wide State of Emergency and curfews have been imposed in some regions due to communal unrest.

Curfews have been announced in various locations of Kandy Administrative District, a popular tourist destination.

Local authorities are authorized to declare local curfews. Further incidents are possible over the next few days, the travel advisory said.

U.S. citizens were instructed to avoid the areas of unrest and exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests. They were advised to monitor local media for updates and Keep a low profile.

The UK also issuing a similar warning requested its citizens to exercise caution, avoid protests and rallies, and comply with local security requirements.
