UNP denounces delay in local government polls

The United National Party (UNP) denounces the delaying of the Local Government polls and the elections should be held at the right time, the State Minister of Finance Eran Wickramaratne said in parliament today.

He made this statement joining the budget committee stage debate on of the Ministry of Child Development and Women’s Affairs.

“The UNP condemns delay in the local government polls. This is a blow to democracy. Elections should be held at the right time.”

The Minister said when a new Constitution is drafted, specific dates on which elections should be held should be clearly defined. He said he doesn’t agree with holding election in stages.

“We do not mislead the country. The objective of the United National Party is to have elections on time,” he said.

The State Minister also said the government fulfilling an elections promise made to the women has taken measures to increase the female representation in the politics by enacting the law to increase female representation to 25 percent at the forthcoming Local Government elections.
