More than 27,000 affected due to bad weather

The Disaster Management Centre says a total of 27,949 persons belonging to 7,916 families in 12 districts have been affected by adverse weather conditions experienced in the island during the past few days.

 

In a statement, the DMC said three persons, two from Nuwara-Eliya and one from Jaffna have been killed while four others have sustained injuries due to bad weather.

 

Persons residing in 50 divisional secretariats in 12 districts have been affected. Accordingly 2,506 persons from 720 families have been relocated to temporary shelters.

 

Meanwhile, several spill gates at reservoirs across the country have been opened due to heavy downpours in catchment areas.

 

Accordingly, Deputy Director at DMC, Pradeep Kodippili said persons residing along river banks and downstream areas must be vigilant of rising water levels. Meanwhile, the Department of Meteorology predicts showers or thundershowers in the Western, Southern, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces.
