Over 3,000 died in road accidents in Sri Lanka last year

Sri Lanka Police Headquarters say nearly 40,000 road accidents have been reported last year because of pedestrians as well as the motorists do not comply with the traffic rules.

According to the Police Headquarters 3,100 people have died in road accidents during the year and another 8,303 were seriously injured.

Most accidents occur due to drunk driving and negligent driving.

Three wheelers were involved in most of the accidents mainly because they were overcrowded and carrying more people than it can safely accommodate.

The police headquarters said that around 100,000 persons, who were caught violating or not adhering to traffic rules, were fined.
