Sri Lanka’s Minister of Health and co-cabinet spokesman Rajith Senaratne said 80 Facebook accounts that disseminated hate speeches and racial messages have been identified.
Those sites were activated from one same location, the Minister said.
He said that the government took all the necessary actions after imposing the ban on social media and arrests have been made on the charges of disseminating racial comments.
The suspects are being interrogated to identify the leaders of this process, he said.
Meanwhile, the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) said investigations are being conducted into 186 Facebook sites that disseminated false propaganda in the past few days.
According to the Cyber Crime Unit of TRCSL, a number of suspects directly connected to the communal clashes erupted in the central part of the country have used social media networking sites to spread false propaganda.
The CID and the Police have launched special operations to apprehend more suspects involved in such acts.
The Cyber Crime Unit stated that special internal investigations into Facebook accounts are still ongoing.
The Unit says they have also initiated already started discussions with Facebook.
