Former Sri Lankan President’s son Yoshitha Rajapaksa allowed to travel abroad for a week

A Sri Lankan court Wednesday granted Yoshitha Rajapaksa, the second son of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, permission to travel abroad.

The Colombo High Court considering a petition filed by Yoshitha granted him permission to leave the country for a week for a personal visit.

Yoshitha Rajapaksa presenting a motion through his lawyers informed the court that he has received an invitation to attend a function organized by the Sri Lankans in the United Arab Emirates as the Chief Guest. The function is to be held on the 6th of this month.

The lawyers appealed to the court to issue an order to remove the current ban on foreign travel from tomorrow to the 12th of this month.

The State counsel for appealing on behalf of the Attorney General did not object to the appeal.

Accordingly, Colombo High Court Judge A. A. R. Heiyanthuduwa allowed permission for Yoshitha Rajapaksa to travel from 5th through 12th of this month and ordered the copy of this order to be sent to the Immigration and Emigration Controller.

The order also stated that after the return, the passport should be handed over to the courts.

Yoshitha Rajapaksa was charged under the Money Laundering Act over the financial discrepancies reported at the Carlton Sports Network (CSN).
