Sri Lanka’s Secretary to the Ministry of Defense Hemasiri Fernando has resigned from his post over the Easter Sunday suicide attacks.
Reportedly, Defense Secretary Hemasiri Fernando has handed over his letter of resignation to President Maithripala Sirisena.
President Maithripala Sirisena Wednesday requested the Defense Secretary Hemasiri Fernando and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to submit their resignations following the public outrage against the top security officials over their failure to inform the public and prevent the Easter Day bombing despite receiving prior warnings of a possible attack.
A coordinated series of suicide bomb attacks on several churches and hotels in the country on Easter Sunday (April 21) in the country had killed 359 people including 36 foreign nationals and injured over 500 more.
