About 50 prisoners staged a riot at the Welikada Prison, said Prisons Spokesperson Chandana Ekanayake.
Speaking to News 1st, the Prisons Spokesperson said that prisoners have been protesting for a month demanding their sentences be commuted.
These actions escalated after prisoners decided to get to the roof of a prison building and started throwing their food at other prisoners below.
Prison guards were summoned to the prison and they have controlled the situation, the Prison Spokesperson added.
