AUSTIN FERNANDO CONFIRMS PRESIDENT SIRISENA DID NOT ASK SUPREME COURT

Sri Lanka’s Presidential Secretary confirmed that his boss, President Maithripala Sirisena had not sought the opinion of the Supreme Court on the issue of the removal of the Prime Minister by the President.

Appearing on the NewsFirst NEWSLINE program on Friday morning, Mr Fernando was asked if there was any possibility for the President to remove the Prime Minister. Fernando responded telling the Newsline host that there was provision and cited as an example a vote f no confidence. Pushed further by the host, the senior most SLAS officer in the country was quite clear.

President Sirisena had indeed asked about his term of office but had not sought an opinion on any possibility of removal of the Prime Minister by the President.

Analysts said that it was now a foregone conclusion that President Sirisena cannot change the Prime Minister other than by consensus, or a no confidence motion.
