The accident took place at 05:30 local time (10:30 GMT) on the Huallaga River, in Muyuna on Sunday (29 Aug), when a boat full of passengers crashed into a freight barge amid dense mist at dawn, according to state channel TV Peru.
The crash caused the wooden passenger boat, the Ayachi, to capsize.
11 dead and 06 injured, while there is an undetermined number of missing persons, the National Institute of Civil Defense said in a statement.
According to witnesses, the barge – with about 80 people on board, including children – was heading from the Santa María village to Yurimaguas. “We came slowly to avoid an accident. We realized that the flat was close, that it had no lights. The boat was moving forward and the impact occurred,” a survivor told RW Television.
