Sri Lanka’s cabinet of ministers has approved a 12.5 percent increase in bus fares from midnight yesterday.
“Upon the Cabinet Approval granted on 22nd May 2018 the bus fare has been increased from 12.5% and the minimum bus fare to be Rs.12.00 since midnight of 22nd May 2018,” the National Transport Commission announced.
Deputy Minister of Transport Ashoka Abeysinghe said that the approval was granted after the fare revision was submitted to the Cabinet this morning. He also noted that there will be no bus fare hike for a period of two years.
Earlier with the hike in fuel prices by the state owned Ceylon Petroleum Corporation, the Cabinet approval was given to increase the bus fare by 6.5 percent.
However, the private bus owners associations protested saying the pay hike granted was not sufficient and also demanded to increase the minimum bus fare.
Following negotiations the unions and authorities agreed to allow a 12.5 percent hike in fare and to raise the minimum bus fare from Rs. 10 to 12.
Meanwhile, the National Transport Commission released the revision with new fares that will be implemented by the private and state sector buses from Tuesday.
Accordingly full fare in respect of approved Inter Provincial (Normal, Semi Luxury, Luxury and Super Luxury) Services implemented by the Sri Lanka Transport Board and Private Passenger Transport Services and the Fare Table depicting 350 Normal Fare Stages are given below for the information of Passengers, Owners, Crew, Authorities and the General Public.
