Case filed against making vaccine mandatory : Health DG makes statement

The Director-General (DG) of Health Services yesterday informed the Supreme Court that the Health Ministry has not issued any law or regulations stating that it is mandatory to obtain COVID-19 vaccination to prevent being infected.

The legal representative of the Health Services DG made the statement when the court took up for consideration the petition claiming that the Government’s decision to make it mandatory for those under the age of 18 to obtain the Covid vaccination was a violation of Fundamental Rights.

The petition was taken up for hearing before a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court.

The legal representative of the Health Services DG said any individual who wants to obtain the vaccine can do so and no mandatory regulations have been issued in this regard.

The Fundamental Rights (FR) petition had been filed by three persons, including Dr. Dharini Rajasingham.

The petitioners claim the decision to make it mandatory to obtain the Covid vaccine is against the law and the Director-General (DG) of Health Services is not vested with powers to issue such an order.

After recording the testimony of the Director-General (DG) of Health Services, the case was postponed to the 11th of January 2022. COURTESY NewsWire
