In a matter of hours it is likely that billionaire Dhammika Perera will be anointed as the SLPP presidential candidate for 2024.
It may well be Dhammika Perera’s crowning moment in a glittering commercial career that sees him today as Sri Lanka’s transparently wealthiest individual. Listed Companies controlled by Dhammika Perera account for 9.9% of all corporate taxes paid in Sri Lanka.
In recent years Mr Perera has turned his focus on developing on-line education and reports suggest his free programmes have attracted over 2 million students. He has separately started a program to encourage students to be educated in the skills of computer coding.
It is expected that the Rajapaksa family political party the SLPP will announce him as their presidential candidate.
Mr Perera is currently a member of parliament and served briefly as a Cabinet Minister under President Gothabya Rajapaksa.
