Field Marshal Minister Sarath Fonseka is reportedly under pressure within the UNP for the critical and harsh remarks made by him about President Maithripala Sirisena at the party’s May Day rally on Sunday (6).
The matter has been raised with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and the Premier has agreed that it was not proper for Fonseka to have made these remarks, UNP sources say.
Fonseka was summoned to Temple Trees on a previous occasion as well.
However, the Prime Minister has said an immediate step would have to be taken with regard to Fonseka’s conduct.
Therefore, Fonseka is now under pressure to apologize to the President at the cabinet meeting on Wednesday.
At the UNP’s May Day rally, Fonseka has said they made the wrong person the president and the country and the party have to now suffer for that action.
He has insisted that the UNP should field its own candidate at the next presidential election.
