Minister of Power & Energy Kanchana Wijesekara says that the government is working on a quota system for fuel for private vehicles, based on the last digit of the number plate.
This has been suggested only for private vehicles used for personal use, while different methods have been already implemented or suggested for public transport, Three-wheelers, other transport services and essential services.
“We are planning to allocate 2 days of the week for all private vehicles to obtain fuel. For an example, two days of the week will be allocated based on the last digit of the number plate” he said addressing a media briefing today.
“Therefore, for an example, vehicles which have the last digits as 0,1 and 2 in the number plate might be allowed to get fuel on Mondays and Thursdays. Same goes for other digits as well” The Minster further said.
He went on to add that this process is still not finalized, however something similar has been suggested to be implemented to manage the limited fuel stocks and reduce the rush in fuel queues.
