The Inspector General of Police (IGP) has ordered to reduce the security details assigned to all former ministers to that of a Member of Parliament, Sri Lanka Police said today.
Accordingly the number of police personnel assigned to the security details of all former ministers will be reduced from seven to just two policemen.
The move comes a day after former Prime Minister and UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe’s security detail was reduced from 1,008 to just 10 personnel.
The IGP in a letter had stated that as Mahinda Rajapaksa has been appointed as the Prime Minister and therefore additional security deployed for former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe attached to the Prime Minister Security Division and the Special task Force (STF) would be withdrawn immediately.
The decision to cut down the security of former minister also comes in the wake of the shooting incident near the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) head office when former minister Arjuna Ranatunga’s guards shot one dead and injured two when a mob had attempted to take him hostage.
