Immediate action to prevent illegal imports of mobile phones: Siyambalapitiya

The Finance Ministry has decided to take immediate measures to prevent the illegal importation of mobile phones, State Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said.

While having a discussion with the mobile phone importers at the ministry, he said that with these illegal imports, the country is losing a lot of tax revenue.

“The IMEI numbers of all legally imported phones are registered with the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) and the phone is identified using this number in case of misplacement or illegal activities,” he said.

During the discussion, it was revealed that illegally imported phones are not being registered at the TRCSL. “Although all mobile phones that are legally imported are not safe for health, illegally imported mobile phones are not safe,” the state minister said.

After considering all aspects, the minister instructed the ministry officials and advised the Trade and Investment Policy Department to take strict action against these illegal mobile phones. He also requested an immediate report in this regard by Monday (6). (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)
