The Government yesterday assured the public that the prevailing LP Gas and Fuel shortage in the country will end before the upcoming Sinhala and Tamil New Year.
Agriculture Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage speaking to journalists in Colombo said the Government hopes to end the LP Gas shortage in the country by the end of this month.
“At present we are incurring a loss of Rs. 5,000 million from each LP Gas ship. But we are not going to burden the people with this extra cost. We will bear the losses and provide LP Gas to the people at a concessionary price. We have ordered enough shipments of LP Gas which will arrive shortly,” he said.
Meanwhile, Energy Minister Gamini Lokuge stated that the fuel shortage in the country will end well before the Sinhala and Tamil New Year.
He said the CPC has already taken steps to send enough fuel (diesel, petrol and kerosene) stocks to its distributing agents islandwide.
The Minister said a decision had been taken to send a diesel bowser and a petrol bowser each to all CPC filling stations in Colombo both in the morning and in the afternoon every day.
The Minister said a ship carrying petrol had started unloading on Wednesday and another ship carrying diesel had started unloading yesterday.
Meanwhile, Minister Aluthgamage said these issues had arisen due to the world economic crisis resulting from the pandemic and they were affecting every country in the world. The war in Ukraine has aggravated the situation and Brent Crude Oil prices had shot up to US$ 130 per barrel in the aftermath of the war, he added. Russia is a leading oil producer.
The Minister said it was unfortunate to see some Opposition political parties trying to seek petty political mileage out of these global issues.
