Former President Mahinda Rajapaksha has informed the United People’s Freedom Alliance parliamentary group that he has resigned from the post of Prime Minister.
Mahinda Rajapaksha announced his decision during a meeting held at his residence down Vijayarama Road this morning.
Yesterday, MP Namal Rajapaksa said Mahinda Rajapaksa has decided to resign from the purported post of Prime Minister.
MP Namal Rajapaksa said the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna with Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party will work to form a broader political coalition with President Maithripala Sirisena. Mahinda Rajapaksa was appointed Prime Minister on the 26th of October but several No-Confidence Motions tabled against him were passed in Parliament with a majority vote.
Meanwhile, President Maithripala Sirisena has informed leader of the United National Party Ranil Wickremesinghe to take oath as Prime Minister tomorrow at 10am at the Presidential Secretariat.
MP Dr. Rajitha Senaratne said no decision has been reached yet on the appointment of a Cabinet of Ministers. MP Senaratne said the President informed his decision via a phone call to Ranil Wickremesinghe.
This is the fifth time that Ranil Wickremesinghe will be sworn in as the country’s Prime Minister, becoming the only individual to have held the post as many times in Sri Lanka.
