Massive program to eradicate corruption and fraud – Law & Order Minister

The government is carrying out a massive program to eradicate corruption and fraud and the Finance Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) was set up to counter financial frauinds, Minister of Law and Order and Southern Development Sagala Ratnayake said.

Delivering a statement in association with the Transparency International to mark the International Anti-corruption Day on Saturday (09), Minister Ratnayake said corruption should be identified as a crime against society and the mankind and battling corruption is a top priority of the unity government’s reform agenda.

He said a key milestone in the battle against corruption was setting up of the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID).

The Minister said currently, 13 fraud cases investigated by the FCID are being heard in the courts while 93 cases have been referred to the Attorney General’s Department for the Attorney General’s advice. Several other cases have been directed to the Bribery and Corruption Commission and other investigative authorities.

The Minister pointed out that investigations of these cases is not an easy task as there are occasions to obtain specialists’ knowledge and in some cases foreign assistance, since such investigations have not been done before.

Similarly, independent commissions have been established under the 19th amendment to the constitution, and accordingly, the Police Commission, which has suffered under political pressure before, now can act without any political influence.

The Minister said the institutions established by the government will battle corruption and fraud in the years to come.

Minister Sagala Ratnayake further said that Prime Minister also testified before the Presidential Commission turning a new page of democracy in the country’s politics.
