The National Unity Alliance (NUA) will contest the upcoming general elections with a coalition of majority and minority parties, its leader and former Western Province Governor Azath Salley was quoted on Thursday.
Salley said that he had to take such a decision to protect people’s interests and to stop depending on major political parties such as United National Party,UNP and Sri Lanka Freedom Party ,SLFP.and SLPP
Recalling that the minority communities have been depending on these two major parties, were misled and their interests were not well looked after during their regime.
“ UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has been dragging his decision to give the prime ministerial candidate post to Sajith Premadasa out of personal animosity, although, Premadasa was officially allowed to contest under a separate alliance with a heart symbol, now Wickremesinghe has turned the table to say Premadasa should contest under the Elephant symbol,” Salley said, describing it as a mockery. “ Wickremesinghe is a wolf in sheep’s clothing,”he stressed ,advising people not to trust him anymore. He has not visited a single Muslim country and he is allergic to Muslims,Salley noted.
He also pointed out that the Yahapalanaya government under former President Maithripala Sirisena and Ranil Wickramasinghe did nothing for Muslims. more than 2800 Muslims were arrested and some yet to be released we are not asking for the release of anybody involved in the Mawanella or the Easter Sunday bomb blast everybody who was arrested under ICCPR and kept over 3 months but the thugs who burnt factories, houses businesses and Mosques were all released within a week
“ We don’t want to trust these parties anymore, minorities will voice their opinion in parliament through their own elected members to nurture community interests,” Salley explained.
Salley said he hopes to field his candidates in all electorates and he is positive to get a fair number of seats with the support of the Sinhala ,Tamil , and Muslim political parties.
