President vows to carry out death sentence

President Maithripala Sirisena reiterated, on Saturday, that he would have the death penalty implemented in respect of drug dealers.

President Sirisena assured that he would not change the decision taken by the government to implement the death penalty for drug traffickers under any circumstance despite the objections raised in some quarters.

Speaking at the launch of the ‘China-Sri Lanka friendship hospital’ in Polonnaruwa, on Saturday, the President referring to a newspaper report that the government hadchanged the decision, said the government had not made an about-turn and would take necessary steps to carry out capital punishment against drug traffickers.

The President said he would summon the heads of judiciary, prisons and law and order next Tuesday to appoint a committee in that regard.

“This committee which will consist of representatives of all the relevant fields would make decisions about the convicted persons who should be executed.”
