Private bus unions demand 10% fare hike

The Lanka Private Bus Owners’ Association demand a 10% bus fare increase following the revision of fuel prices by the government recent.

Chairman of the Lanka Private Bus Owners’ Association Gemunu Wijeratne speaking during a media briefing held in Colombo demanded a price revision by next week.

He said the proposal will be handed over to transport authorities on Monday.

Gemunu Wijeratne added that the heavy traffic congestion within main municipalities across the country has also hampered the private transport industry.

Accordingly Gemunu Wijeratne demanded a prompt response from the government.

He said Executives of the Association have decided that in line with the revision of fuel prices, the government must implement the annual fare revision.

He noted the union has also included a percentage for the unprecedented traffic congestion in main cities.

Wijeratne noted the new price revision must be in place before the end of next week adding the minimum bus fare must also increase.

The revision of fuel prices imposed yesterday is currently in effect at both Ceylon Petroleum Cooperation and Lanka Indian Oil Corporation operated filling stations.

Accordingly a litre of 92-Octane petrol is sold at 137 rupees while a litre of 95 Octane is sold at 148 rupees from last Friday.

Meanwhile Lanka auto diesel is sold at 109 rupees per litre while a litre of Super Diesel has been revised from 110 rupees to 119 rupees.
