SENEVIRATNE PETITIONS AGAINST DEATH PENALTY

A Writ petition has been filed at the Court of Appeal seeking an interim order preventing the implementation of the death sentence.

The petition has been filed by veteran journalist Malinda Seneviratne citing Commissioner General of Prisons and the Superintendent of Welikada Prison as its respondents.

In his petition, Mr. Seneviratne says the President had recently stated that he has already signed the relevant documents to impose the death penalty on 4 convicts.

However, he points out implementing the death penalty could lead to violation of human rights.

Hence, the petitioner seeks the Appeals Court to issue an interim order to the Commissioner General of Prisons and the Superintendent of Welikada Prison to prevent the implementation of the death sentence.

At the time of going to press Court has issued a hearing date of 2nd July 2019 to hear the petition following assurances from the Department of Prisons that “executions will not take place for a week”.

The Finance Minister has warned that Sri Lanka risks losing the GSP Plus facility from the European Union in the event the executions go ahead as planned. In that event it would be the second time that the GSP Plus facility has been suspended.
